Nesting Petals Tutorial

Today, I'm sharing with you another tutorial for a flower I have created.

Here is the flower you will be creating.

Supplies Needed:
*Embossing Stylus, skewer
*Embossing pad(s)
*glue
*Water spritzer
*Tattered Florals Die - 3 spindly layers, 2 medium layers, and 3 small layers

Take the 3 spindly flowers. Flip your layer over on the embossing pad (mousepad) and using the stylus (or a small paintbrush or skewer), emboss 3 lines down each petal of all three layers.  This is all you need to do on your bottom layer.  On the other 2 layers, using the skewer or paintbrush, roll each petal under.  Then lay them on the embossing pad and press down into the center of the layer in a circular motion to draw the petals up.
 For the 2 medium and 3 small layers, spritz with water one at a time.  Lay on your embossing pad and using the stylus, gently press each petal starting at the edges and working inward to curl up the petals.  Each layer, you will curl up a little tighter than the one before.

Assemble the layers starting with the flat spindly layer on bottom and working your way up alternating the petals as you go.  Place a bead or pearls in the very center of the smallest layer.

You can add some stickles or diamond dust to the petals on the spindly layers to add some sparkle!
This is a pretty easy tutorial and flower.

Stay tuned throughout the week for more flower tutorials!  I have 4 more to go and more to make!!!  I'll even be sharing with you my tutorial on making my delicate 1" mini roses and 1.5" delicate roses!!

If you feel that this flower resembles one you have created a tutorial for or know of a tutorial for, please let me know so that I can review that tutorial and talk with the creator.  I do not want to step on anyone's toes and will gladly pull my tutorial down if need be!!

Thanks for looking!

Prickly Rose Tutorial

Today, I'm going to share with you a tutorial for my Prickly Rose.  I created this flower

for the Tim Holtz Tattered Floral Challenge.  I was disappointed, as I'm sure were many others, to not have won, but at least I got to challenge myself to create a new flower, which I always love doing.

Supplies Needed:
* Tim Holtz Tattered Floral Die - 2 spindly  layers, 3 med layers, 1 small layer
* Scissors, Tweezers
* glue
* embossing pad
* embossing stylus
* skewer

There are many items that can be used to supplement what you may not own.  You can use the backside of a mousepad for an embossing pad. You can use the end of a paintbrush for embossing tools.  I use a skewe to roll petals, but you can also use a paintbrush or any other small round tool to do this.

Take the two spindly layers. Stick your tweezers on the end of a petal, twist the petal and then pinch your finger on the twist to make sure it stays in place while you pull out the tweezers. Repeat this on every petal.
Turn each one over on your embossing pad. Using an embossing stylus, press the base of each petal to cause the petals to curl under.  Then, flip your flower over and press in the middle section to draw the petals up.  Do this on each of the spindly layers.

Take your 3 medium layers, cut a little bit between each petal.  Using your skewer, roll each petal back at a slight angle.

Place each of these layers on your embossing pad and using your stylus press down in the center of the layer in a circular motion to draw the petals up.  One side (the higher angle) will overlap the next petal (the lower angle).

Place your smallest layer on an embossing pad, using the stylus, beging to rub the inside of each petal starting at the edges and rubbing into the center and then down to the base to get the petals to curl up and inward.

 Place some glue on the inside of each of the petals. Carefull begin to "roll" your bud. It creates a nicer bud if you make sure one edge of each petal overlaps the edge of the next petal.   Roll your bud and hold it in place until the glue dries to keep the shape.
Glue your spindly layers together offsetting the petals.  Then glue the 3 medium layers together offsetting the petals.

Assemble your flower by gluing the bud into the medium layers, then glue the medium layers onto the spindly layers.

You can add some diamond dust or stickles to the spindly layers as I did in my first picture in the post.  I think the plain is a great flower for a boys page, but making it sparkle with diamond dust makes it a perfect accent on a girly page.

I generally try to stay clear of any other flower making tutorials, because I don't want to subconsciously copy someone else's design.  If you think this flower or any other flower I create resembles one from someone else, please leave me a comment or contact me through email to let me know who and what.  I will check their tutorial and contact them about this.  I do not want to infringe on anyone else's designs and I will pull my tutorial if this happens!

Thanks so much for visiting my blog.  Please stay tuned for more flower tutorials coming soon.

Ranger Seasonal Color Palette:April contest

Ranger Ink is having a contest with their April color palette, so I decided to create a tag and join in the fun.

I started my tag using only the top piece, which was a smaller tag.  I covered it with vintage photo distress stain, then spritzed with water and dried.  I distress the edges using my Distrezz-It-All, then inked with chipped sapphire.  I embossed it with the Cuttlebug Leafy Branch folder, then embossed the raised leaves with Peeled Paint Distress Embossing Powder.  Once it was finished, I covered it with Mod Podge.

I stamped the nest with frayed burlap distress ink, then embossed with walnut stain distress embossing powder.  Fussy cut it out.  The bird was stamped with Chipped Sapphire (from the Tim Holtz Flights of Fancy), then embossed with antiquities frosted crystal and fussy cut out.  I stamped 'Listen to Your Heart' (from T.H. Flights of Fancy) in Coffee Archival Ink.

I cut the frame for the sentiment from Tim Holtz Die Tag & Bookplates, and cut out the middle circle part of it to make the sentiment fit.  The frame is also embossed with the Cuttlebug Leafy Branch folder.  I used brads to hold the two together.  The leaves and flourish are from the Heartfelt Creations Spellbinders Die Belle Rose.  The yellow I covered with puffy paint, then heated it up for a bubbly look.  The green has been sprayed with English Ivy glimmer mist.  The flowers were made from the Spellbinders Bitty Blossoms die.

Once I had all my embellishments cut out, I knew there was no way I would get them all to fit on the original small tag.  So I cut the top off of it.  Got a bigger tag, inked with Vintage photo distress stain, and embossed with the Leafy Vine folder again.  Distress the edges and ink with Chipped sapphire.  I embossed the leaves with Peeled Paint Distress embossing powder, but didn't cover it with mod podge.

Thanks for looking and have a great weekend!

Deep Within & Beauty in Bloom

Just wanted to share a couple of layouts that I've gotten done.  I made all the flowers myself.  The little roses are made with the bitty blossoms die, I finally mastered them!!  I cut the flourishes with the Belle Rose die from Heartfelt creations.  The butterflies are from Kay's Kreative Korner.

The following layout is for a friend of mine.  I offered to do a layout of her daughter ever year as a birthday gift.  She displays them in a frame for the year, then when she gets the new one, she is going to put the previous year's in an album.  The first one can be viewed here.  This layout was inspired and somewhat copies from the very talented Natasha.  Please take time to view her "Beautiful Souls" layout. I made all the elements myself - the bling, the butterflies, the flowers, the leaves...but not the lace! LOL

The big corner flower is my own "prickly rose" that I'm going to post a tutorial for soon.  The smaller, but big flower to the right is the "Prima style flower by Rachel".  The smaller roses are either made with the retro punch or bitty blossoms die. The butterflies I printed on photo paper, fussy cut, stickled, and added wire for the antennae. I can tell you the butterflies are Webster's Pages, and most likely the file for them was made by someone that very kindly shared them, but I apologize because I cannot remember who.  If you know, please leave me a comment so I can give them credit!!

Prickly Rose

Tim Holtz is having a tattered floral challenge, and I have so many flowers I have created with this die, that I couldn't resist joining this challenge.

Here is one I'm calling a Prickly Rose...I will be posting instructions soon to create your own!

2012 Snowman Hats

My snowman hats seemed to gain in popularity this year.  I've made 5 so far, and I have one more left to make, which is the one for myself.

This first one I made for my mom. She requested mainly red and white with some silver and green.  She also asked for a large 3-wick candle in the "top hat" rather than the fake candle I usually put in front with the decorations.  Mom was thrilled with hers and already put in an order for next year to give as gifts.

When she isn't burning the candle, she can put the lid on the top hat and you'd never know there was a candle inside!

 This one I made for my sister.  She loves the color purple, so requested the purple, blue, pink and green with a bit of silver!  She loved it!!

I think this is my extra one that I may end up selling.

This one I think my 5 year old picked out for his kindergarten teacher.  We'll take the lid off and fill it with some homemade cookies for an extra special treat.

This one my boyfriend picked out to give his mom for a gift.  She loved it!

A tag I made just filling in time between hats.

All of the flowers on all of the hats were handmade by me.  The bigger flowers are designs by Natasha, her curly flower.  I really love that flower for Christmas items.  The other roses are all my own designs.  I love the roses, but I've been lazy and never made a tutorial to post!  Maybe I will do that soon!!  I did buy the Tim Holtz Pinecone die this year and made some pinecones that I stuck on some of the hats, but I have yet to get that one correct.  I wasn't too happy with how my pinecones turned out.

All of the other items are mini ornaments or craft/floral picks I buy at Walmart, Stephen's, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and JoAnn's.

Thanks for looking!  I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
